GUWAHATI, Jan 29: Australian batting star Steve Smith became the 15th batter in the history of Test cricket to complete 10,000 runs in the longest format of the game. The former Australia captain reached the milestone on the first day of the first test against Sri Lanka in Galle today.
Smith, who was stuck at 9,999 runs at the end of the five-match Border-Gavaskar series against India, reached the milestone prior to lunch today, as he took a single towards long-on off the bowling of Prabath Jayasuriya.
The Australian batter took 205 innings to reach the feat, thus becoming the second fastest after Ricky Ponting who had taken 196 innings.
Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara had each taken 195 innings to reach to 10,000 runs in Tests.
Meanwhile, the Australian batter, who is captaining Australia in the absence of Pat Cummins, went on to slam another century — his 34th in Tests — to put the visitors in a commanding position against hosts Sri Lanka.
