Assam: Poacher killed in fierce gunbattle with forest guards at Nameri National Park; hand-made gun, deer carcass recovered

GUWAHATI, Jn 20: A poacher was killed in a fierce encounter with forest guards at Nameri National Park in Assam’s Sonitpur district.

The encounter took place at Dikorai, around 50 kilometres from the regional office of the park. Forest officials said they were fired at by the poachers forcing them to retaliate in which the poacher was killed.

Forest guards also recovered a hand-made rifle besides the carcass of a deer from the area.

The poacher had entered the park with the intention of killing deer for venison, Forest guards said.

The slain poacher was yet to be identified till the filing of this report.
