Los Angeles wildfires: 25 dead so far, 30 missing; powerful winds spark fresh fire warnings

GUWAHATI, Jan 15: The death toll in the devastating wildfire in Los Angeles has risen to 25 while at least 30 others remain unaccounted for as the US National Weather Service warned that hurricane-force winds could potentially reignite the already raging wildfires.

In its latest update, US weathermen warned that the powerful ‘Santa Ana’ winds gusting up to 110 km per hour in Los Angeles could reignite the sparks and spread quicky.

The wildfires have destroyed more than 12,000 structures and forced nearly one lakh people to evacuate from their homes and seek refuge in safer places.

Although the cause of the devastating blaze is yet to be known, the inferno has become the worst wildfire in the history of the United States.

Meanwhile, reports say initial estimates have pegged the damage and economic losses between USD 135 billion to USD 150 billion.

Six major wildfires — the Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Kenneth Fire, Hurst Fire, Woodley Fire, Lidia Fire, Sunset Fire, and Tyler Fire — are blazing around Los Angeles.

The wildfires in Palisades and Eaton have been the worst and both, reports stated, are now among the most destructive in California’s history.
