Los Angeles wildfires: Death toll mounts to 16; firefighters working desperately to contain blaze

GUWAHATI, Jan 12: Firefighters in the US are working desperately to contain the wildfires in Los Angeles that have so far claimed 16 lives, news agency AFP reported citing local authorities.

While 11 of the 16 who have perished in the worst wildfires in decades were reported from the Eaton Fire zone, five died in the Palisades Fire zone, reports further said.

As firefighters continued efforts to contain the wildfires, powerful winds are fuelling the blazes that has turned parts of the iconic city into something even worse than a warzone.

Officials, meanwhile, have warned of heightened risks as dry winds look to further intensify the blazes.

Six major wildfires — the Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Kenneth Fire, Hurst Fire, Woodley Fire, Lidia Fire, Sunset Fire, and Tyler Fire — are blazing around Los Angeles. Nearly 40,000 acres of land and over 12,000 structures, including residences and businesses, have been flattened and reduced to ash.

The wildfires in Palisades and Eaton have been the worst and both, reports also stated, are now among the most destructive in California’s history.
