Heavy snowfall affects tourist routes in Sikkim

GUWAHATI, Jan 8: The upper reaches of Sikkim has been receiving heavy rainfall since the past couple of days which has led to either partial or complete closure of several tourist routes in the State.

The snowfall has also led to a sharp dip in temperatures in the Himalayan state.

The State Government has issued an advisory to tourists while also restricting travel permits to some worst-affected areas.

Authorities, reports stated, have canceled all advance permits for JN Road prioritizing safety of tourists amid the severe weather conditions.

Tourists as well as the local people have been advised to stay cautious and plan their trips accordingly.

Current Route Updates (Wednesday, Jan 8):

  1. JN Road: Open only up to the 10th Mile. No permits are being issued for Kanchenjunga View Point, Changu Lake, Nathula, and Baba Mandir.
  2. RN Road: Accessible up to Dzaluk, but Thambi View Point is closed. Permits are restricted to Dzaluk.
  3. Lachung: Travel permitted up to Yumthang; Zero Point remains closed. Permits are limited to Yumthang Valley.
  4. Lachen: Open till Lachen, but Gurudongmar Lake is closed. Permits are restricted to Lachen.
