GUWAHATI, Dec 23: Northeast Frontier Railway Sports Association (NFRSA) won the 2nd Protech Guwahati Premier League Football title defeating Pride East Mavericks in the final at Judges Field on Sunday night.
NFRSA won 7-6 via sudden death after regular time and a tie-breaker failed to determine the winner in the final played under floodlights.
NFRSA took the lead through Sibra Narzary in the 35th minute as his header found the back of the Mavericks’ net. Pride East Mavericks responded immediately thereafter although the score remained 1-0 in favour of NFRSA at half-time.
The Mavericks continued playing attacking football in the second half but failed to find an equaliser until Amber Chetri scored in the final minute (90+5 minute) heading in a corner to keep Mavericks in the game.
In the tie-breaker, both teams scored all their five penalties following which the match went to sudden death in which NFRSA won 7-6.
While champions NFRSA became richer Rs 15 lakh along with the winner’s trophy, runners-up Pride East Mavericks pocketed Rs 7 lakh. Semi finalists United Chirang Duar and FC Green Valley were awarded Rs 1.5 lakh each.
Assam Health and Irrigation Minister Ashok Singhal attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest along with several other eminent personalities including GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania, Protech Group MD Manoj Jalan, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and News Live Chief Managing Editor Syed Zarir Hussain.
