GUWAHATI, Dec 13: Congratulatory messages keep pouring in for Indian chess prodigy Gukesh D who, at 18 years, created history yesterday by becoming the youngest world chess champion defeating China’s Ding Liren at the FIDE World Championship in Singapore.
Before Gukesh, the legendary Garry Kasparov of Russia was the youngest world chess champion when he won the title at the age of 22, dethroning Anatoly Karpov, also of Russia, in 1985.
Gukesh becomes the second Indian after five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand to win the world chess champion title.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his ‘X’ handle to congratulate the Indian prodigy on his incredible performance.
“Historic and exemplary!
Congratulations to Gukesh D on his remarkable accomplishment. This is the result of his unparalleled talent, hard work and unwavering determination.
His triumph has not only etched his name in the annals of chess history but has also inspired millions of young minds to dream big and pursue excellence.
My best wishes for his future endeavours. @DGukesh,” he wrote, responding to a post by the International Chess Federation.
President Droupadi Murmu also congratulated Gukesh on winning the world champion title.
“Heartiest congratulations to Gukesh for becoming the youngest player to win the World Chess Championship. He has done India immensely proud. His victory stamps the authority of India as a chess powerhouse. Well done Gukesh! On behalf of every Indian, I wish you sustained glory in the future,” the President of India’s ‘X’ handle posted.
