Landmark bill seeking social media ban for children under 16 passed! Know where…

PUBLISHED:

GUWAHAT, Nov 27: Australia inched one step closer to banning children under 16 years of age from using the social media, with the country’s House of Representatives passing a bill to this effect on Wednesday.

Australia, once the legislation gets enacted, will become the first country in the world to ban children from using social media.

The legislation is supported by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Labor government, and received overwhelming backing with 102 votes in favour and 13 against it.

The government wants the bill passage by the end of the parliamentary year on Thursday.

Meanwhile, tech giants like Google and Meta called for a delay in passage of the bill which, once passed, will lead to one of the strictest social media regulations in the world.

The issue has sparked a bitter debate between people and groups advocating for the ban and those opposing it.
