GUWAHATI, Nov 23: NPP candidate Mehtab Chandee Sangma, wife of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, won the Gambegre bypolls defeating her nearest rival Sadhiarani M Sangma of the Trinamool Congress by a margin of 4,594 votes.
While Mehtab Chandee, a medical profession, polled 12,678 votes, Sadhiarani got 8,084 votes.
Jingjang M Marak of the Congress party got 7,695 votes while BJP’s Bernard N Marak secured 710 votes.
The by-polls was Mehtab Chandee’s debut in electoral politics while for Sadhiarani Sangma, wife of three-term former MLA Zenith Sangma, today’s defeat has been the third in a row having lost the assembly elections from the seat twice, in 2018 and 2023.
Elections in Gambegre were necessitated after Saleng Sangma, who won from the seat in 2023, was elected to the Lok Sabha from Tura seat in June this year.
