GUWAHATI, Nov 23: The BJP-led alliance made it 5-0 in the by-elections in Assam with the biggest and most satisfying victory coming from Samaguri where BJP candidate Diplu Ranjan Sarmah defeated Congress candidate Tanzil Hussain, son of former Samaguri MLA and ex-minister Rakibul Hussain, and ensured that the seat did not go to the third generation of the Hussain family.
As per reports, Diplu Ranjan defeated Tanzil by 26,200 votes as BJP supporters went into a frenzy following the long-awaited victory that finally came for them.
On the other hand, BJP candidate Diganta Ghatowal had earlier defeated his Congress rival Jayanta Bora by a margin of over 9,000 votes in Behali while AGP candidate Diptimoyee Choudhury — wife of former 8-time Bongaigaon MLA Phani Bhushan Choudhury — defeated Congress candidate Brajenjit Singha by nearly 35 thousand votes in Bongaigaon.
Nihar Ranjan Das, on the other hand, won from the Dholai seat defeating his Congress rival Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha by nearly 10,000 votes.
UPPL’s Nirmal Kumar Brahma made it 5-0 for the BJP-AGP-UPPL alliance defeating his nearest candidate Suddho Basumatary of the BPF to bag the Sidli seat.
