By-polls: Over 70% turnout in 5 seats in Assam; Rakibul, candidate son Tanzil face voters’ ire at Samaguri

GUWAHATI, Nov 13: Approximately 74.8% of the eligible electorate exercised their franchise in the five assembly seats that went to by-polls in Assam today.

The figure, however, is based on independent ground tabulations and not projections released by the Election Commission.

According to ground reports, 79% voter turnout was recorded at Samaguri till 5pm while Behali recorded 76%, Dholai 74%, Sidli 73% and Bongaigaon recorded a turnout of 72% till 5pm.

Barring Samaguri, voting was by and large peaceful in Behali, Sidli, Bongaigaon and Dholai seats.

Stray incidents of clashes were reported from Samaguri with angry voters attaccking a vehicle with a fake Press sticker. Reports said a loyalist of Rakibul Hussain reportedly tried to enter a polling booth with the car but people attacked it after the driver failed to produce any valid identy card of the media organization.

On the other hand, Congress goons reportedly prevented BJP candidate Diplu Ranjan Sarmah from entering a polling booth.
