GUWAHATI, Oct 11: Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organisation representing survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

The group was honoured for its work in advocating for a nuclear-free world.

The Nobel committee said it had decided to award the prize to Nihon Hidankyo “for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again”.

Earlier this week, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to scientists David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper while the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun.

South Korean author Han Kang was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature yesterday.
