GUWAHATI, April 9: Desertions in the Congress seems to have no let-up with three more prominent leaders quitting the grand old party in the past 24 hours.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) general secretary Padmalochan Doley, who had unsuccessfully contested the last assembly elections from Dhokuakhana, tendered his resignation from the Congress party. He later joined the BJP along with a number of his supporters.
On the other hand Mohim Hazarika, known to be close to APCC president Bhupen Bora, also quit the Congress party while Shankarjyoti Hazarika, another senior functionary of the party from Jorhat who is known to be close to the party’s Jorhat candidate and sitting Lok Sabha MP from the now renamed Kaliabar constituency, also tendered his resignation from the Congress. Both Mohim Hazarika and Shankarjyoti Hazarika later joined the saffron party.
Meanwhile, a senior NSUI leader also left the party’s youth wing. Mahesh Doley, the president of Jonai NSUI unit, resigned from the Congress’s youth wing.
The Congress has been left high and dry in the past couple of weeks leading to the upcoming Lok Sabha polls with a number of senior party leaders along with thousands of activists quitting the party and, a majority of them, joining the BJP.
