Coaching centres cannot enrol students below 16 years of age, make misleading promises and guarantee rank or good marks, according to new guidelines announced by the Ministry of Education.

The new guidelines have provided for a financial penalty of up to Rs one lakh or cancellation of the coaching centres’ registration if they charge exorbitant fees or get involved in other malpractices.

The new guidelines also advise the coaching institutes against making misleading promises and guaranteeing rank or good marks. The guidelines also address fee-related matters, emphasising fair and reasonable and detailed prospectuses.

The latest guidelines came following complaints received by the government about rising cases of student taking extreme steps, fire incidents, lack of facilities in coaching incidents as well as methodologies of teaching adopted.

Regarding class-related aspects, the guidelines stress timely completion of classes. Overall, the latest guidelines issued by Ministry aims to establish a regulatory framework that ensures the well-being and proper education of students attending coaching centres.
