Guwahati: Man attempts suicide by jumping off Saraighat Bridge, rescued

PUBLISHED:

Another youth, the second person in the past two days, jumped into the Brahmaputra from the new Saraighat bridge today but was fortunately rescued by a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

It was high drama at the bridge with the youth, identified as Hafizur Ahmed, a resident of Baihata Chariali, taking most of the passersby by surprise, and others shocked, when he climbed over the railings of the bridge and threatened to hump off the bridge.

Locals present tried to convince him not to do so but he did not listen to anyone and finally took the plunge into the river.

He was, however, rescued by a joint team of alert police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). He was later taken to hospital for treatment.

Hafizur said he was in love with a girl from his village and both want to get married. However, the girl’s family was opposed to their marriage and that’s what led him to attempt suicide.

The Saraighat Bridge, incidentally, has turned into a virtual ‘suicide point’ with several incidents of people disillusioned with their lives jumping off the bridge and taking their own lives.
