Though it has already been a year, it still takes a moment to accept that singing legend KK died on this day exactly 365 days ago. The legendary singer left behind a void in the world of music that could never be filled.
Be it heartbreak or a new crush, and there is an apt song for every mood by singer KK. A singer that barely ever missed a single note while crooning songs for the biggest Bollywood stars. KK’s talent was unparalleled.
It almost feels like a part of our childhood and teenage left us last year on this day with so many unresolved emotions.
Even today, the 90’s kids (who aren’t kids anymore) playlist is full of KK songs. The entire generation can never thank him in words how his voice and words became a constant companion during all the low points of our lives.
From school to college, from job to marriage, from walkman to smartphone, he was always there.
Whether it was celebrating friendship with Pal, Yaaron, crying with Maine Dil se Kaha, or expressing love with O Meri Jaan–there wasn’t any emotion that was not dominated by him.
Zara Sa, I am in love, Aasahayein, Tadap Tadap, Awarapan, Sach Keh Raha Hai..a KK song is always there for every stage of life.
Every time, we millennials experienced romance or heartbreak, we unwittingly hummed his melodies in our heads, because you don’t just listen to those songs, you experience them.
Someone rightly said that KK was the voice of our collective nostalgia because you hear one song and your mind automatically goes back to the good old times.
The other reason is why millions adore him is because he is the one versatile singer who stayed away from all unnecessary limelight and controversies and just let his voice do all the talking.
They certainly don’t make them like him anymore. All said and done, we as a generation, are so lucky and privileged to have grown up listening to KK’s soothing and soulful voice. His art, his voice, his melody, his power will live on. Even in his last moments, his voice brought happiness to people. Rest in MUSIC, legend.
As we observe KK’s first death anniversary, we take a look at his musical career:
KK’s musical career
In 1999, KK released his debut solo pop rock album Pal, with music by Leslie Lewis. The songs Pal, Yaaron and Aap Ki Dua became instant hits with the people securing him a loyal fan base. He released his next album, Humsafar, in 2008. Over the years, KK sang many in several languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Bengali, Assamese and Gujarati.
Though KK sang parts in Chhod Aaye Hum (1996 film Maachis) his first song in Bollywood was Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil Se (1999 film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam). He also sang Awaarapan Banjarapan in Jism (2002), Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai in Woh Lamhe (2006), Labon Ko in Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Aankhon Mein Teri in Om Shanti Om (2007), Khuda Jane in Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), Dil Kyun Yeh Mera in Kites (2010) Mat Aazma Re in Murder 3 (2013), India Wale in Happy New Year (2014) and Tu Jo Mila from Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015). He also won the National Award for his song Tu Aashiqui Hai from Jhankaar Beats. The song Dhoop Paani Bahne De from Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga was the first song released after KK’s death.
KK sang for television serials, including Shaka Laka Boom Boom, Just Mohabbat, Kuch Jhuki Si Palkein, Hip Hip Hurray, Kkavyanjali and Just Dance. He also sang Tanha Chala, the title track of the Pakistani TV show The Ghost.
KK’s death
KK died on May 31, 2022, due to a heart attack while he was performing in Kolkata. He felt unwell after his performance at Nazrul Manch and was taken to the CMRI hospital. The doctors declared him dead upon arrival. KK is survived by his wife Jyothy Krishna. They have two children together – Nakul and Taamara.
