Assam: Deputy Commissioners to be known as District Commissioners

The Assam Government on Friday (May 19) said that all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) will be known as District Commissioners.

This decision was taken during a cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Janata Bhawan in Guwahati on Friday.

During the cabinet meeting, it has also been decided that the District Commissioners will have the power to transfer gazetted and non-gazetted officials within the concerned district.

However, before the transfer of gazetted employees, the approval of the concerned Guardian Minister will be required.

Further, Cabinet has also decided to abolish the Office of Divisional Commissioner and its statutory powers will be exercised by the Principal Secretary of the General Administrative Department (GAD).

The employees and assets of the Office of Divisional Commissioner will be transferred to respective DCs.
