Dibrugarh: A suspected link man of ULFA(I) has been injured in police firing in Jeypore, Dibrugarh. The person, identified as one Babul Deka, was on his way to a pre-designated spot to collect an extortion amount from a tea garden company. A Dibrugarh Police team led by SP Shwetank Mishra and Additional SP Bitul Chetia and Namrup DSP Naba Kumar Bora was in waiting for the collector.

Around two weeks ago, a demand note on the writing pad of ULFA(I) with two live bullets was received by Sarada Tea Factory. There was a demand of Rs. 20 lakh from the tea company. Dibrugarh Police became alert and laid a trap on the day of collection.

When Babul Deka, who was on a motorcycle came face to face with the police team he tried running away and was shot. Deka received an injury on his left leg. He has admitted to his role of a collection man for ULFA(I) and revealed that he had distributed extortion notes to a few more nearby tea gardens. The Dibrugarh Police will confirm Deka’s credentials whether he is an ULFA(I) cadre or not only after proper investigation. The injured man is undergoing treatment at Dibrugarh Medical (AMCH).

Meanwhile, ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah has denied any involvement of the organisation with the incidents of extortion. Baruah communicated through a release that as ULFA(I) is in ceasefire mode with the government, there are no chances of breaking the rules. The release said that in the past few months many people have tried to use the name of ULFA(I) to do such illegal acts. Baruah threatened to take strict action against those who try to malign the name of the organisation.
