GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday in Barhampur, Nagaon destroyed a total of 58,000 seized cough syrups. Also, other seized contraband items including heroin, opium and ganja worth Rs. 36 crore were burned in the drugs disposal programme.
The illegal cough syrups and drugs were seized from different parts of Assam.
“We are going to burn 9.733 kg heroin, 253 kg opium, 977 gm opium, 253 kg Ganja, 2,71,908 tablets,” said Assam CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
It is to be noted that Assam Police seized drugs worth Rs. 700 crore in the past two months. The seized contraband has been planned to be destroyed in two days, on the first day the drive took place on Diphu and Golaghat and today( July 18), the drive is going on at Nagaon and Hojai district of Assam.
Speaking about yesterday’s drive at Golaghat, 802-gram heroin worth more than Rs 20 crore, 1205 kg ganja, 3 kg opium and 2,06,906 tablets were burnt by Assam Police personnel in presence of the Assam Chief Minister.
In a series of Tweet, the Chief Minister said, “Fight Against Drugs These are defining images! The blazing flames of seized drugs display our government’s commitment of Drugs Mukta Assam. We shall not tolerate #Assam being used as a transit route for psychotropic substances & our youths falling prey to contraband drugs. 1/5.”
“For second consecutive day, @assampolice‘s dedicated tirade has led to destroying of 9.733 kg heroin, 253.301 kg ganja, 977 opium, 78340 cough syrup & 271904 nos. of tablets. The fight will continue till the scourge of #drug trafficking is eliminated. 2/5,” Sarma added.
“Some anti-social elements have been taking advantage of #Assam‘s proximity to Golden Triangle & using our land as transit routes for #drugs trafficking. However, we’ve been firm in our resolve to handle this menace with strictest measures. The results are visible. 3/5,” the Chief Minster further said.

Minister Pijush Hazarika, Keshab Mahanta; MLA Jitu Goswami , MLA Rupak Sarmah, MLA Sashi Kanta Das and  Assam Police DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta were present in the drugs disposal programme.
