Former Assam CM Sonowal likely to join PM Modi’s cabinet today

PUBLISHED:

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to announce the highly-speculated cabinet reshuffle in his Council of Ministers on Wednesday evening, reportedly at 6 PM.

This is the first cabinet reshuffle since he assumed the charge for a second term.

Assam’s former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal reached Delhi on Tuesday as he is set to take a new position in the central cabinet.

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta BiswaSarma will also be present at the announcement event.

According to top government sources, the new cabinet will be the youngest ever in India’s history.

Apart from Sonowal, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Narayan Rane, all of whom are being seen as probable for induction as ministers in the Modi government, arrived in the national capital on Tuesday.

The Union Cabinet, which can have 81 members, currently has 53 ministers. This means 28 ministers can be added.

PM Modi is making changes to his cabinet for the first time since he started his second term in 2019.

The expansion is likely to factor in polls in five states next year and the 2024 national election.

The creation of the new ministry indicates the Centre’s commitment to community-based developmental partnership, according to a release from the Cabinet Secretariat.
