9 injured, 14 arrested, vehicles torched as violence breaks out during Hanuman Jayanti procession in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri

Guwahati: Violence broke out between two communities during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area on Saturday evening.

Several police personnel was injured in the ensuing violence.

According to the police, stones were pelted and some vehicles torched in the violence that occurred at around 6 pm on Saturday. Security personnel were deployed to the region to get the situation under control.

The Delhi Police initiated its investigation into the incident on Saturday night. An FIR was lodged and 14 people arrested. Here are the latest developments in this case:

9 INJURED

A total of nine people were injured in the incident. This includes eight cops and one civilian. The injured were admitted to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital.

One sub-inspector sustained a bullet injury. His condition is stable.

14 ARRESTED

An FIR has been lodged and 14 people have been arrested in connection with the violence on Saturday evening. Of the 14, one has been accused of opening fire. The pistol used for the same has been recovered from him. He was involved in a police case in 2020 as well.

Further investigation is underway. The police are trying to figure out whether the clash was part of a planned conspiracy or if it broke out suddenly after a quarrel.

Delhi’s Commissioner of Police said the local police will continue to investigate the incident, at least for now.

DRONES, CCTV FOOTAGE

The Delhi Police is combing through CCTV footage in order to identify the main culprits in the incident.

The police are also using drone footage to see if stones were stored on the rooftops of houses.

INTENSIVE PATROLLING

Meanwhile, the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar went on high alert and carried out intensive patrolling in the wake of the communal clashes on Saturday evening.

HEAVY SECURITY DEPLOYMENT

In Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area, there was heavy security deployment even on Sunday morning.

5 CRPF COMPANIES SENT

As per sources, the Union home ministry has deployed five more companies of the Central Reserve Police Force to maintain law and order in Delhi. Five hundred jawans will be stationed in different parts of the city.

The CRPF will cooperate with Delhi Police to ensure security is maintained.

Two companies of the Rapid Action Force were deployed on Saturday itself.

AMIT SHAH’S ORDER

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Commissioner of Police and Special Commissioner (law and order) on Saturday and directed them to take all necessary action following the violence, sources said.

The Delhi Police also apprised the top functionaries of the Union Home Ministry about the situation.

CM KEJRIWAL’S APPEAL

Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal said that the incident was extremely condemnable and appealed to all to maintain peace.

He said the Lt Governor had assured him that all steps were being to ensure peace and that guilty would not be spared.

“The incident of stone-pelting on Shobhayatra (procession) in Delhi”s Jahangirpuri is extremely condemnable. Strict action should be taken against the guilty. Appeal to all – maintain peace and hold each other”s other,” Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi.
