Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday announced his flagship health policy — Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Abhiyaan or the National Health Protection Scheme that aims to cover over approximately 50 crore beneficiaries and provide health cover up to Rs 5 lakh per family a year. Speaking to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Prime Minister Modi said the scheme will be rolled out on September 25 this year.

Highlighting the welfare schemes undertaken by the central government, Prime Minister Modi — who addressed his fifth and final Independence Day speech prior to the 2019 general elections — said the country will see an Indian on a space mission under an indigenous space project called ‘Gaganyaan‘ before 2022.

In his 80-minute speech, Prime Minister also touched upon what he said was progress made on the economic front, on women empowerment, GST, Swachh Bharat mission etc.
He also lauded the achievements of sportspersons from the Northeast who, Prime Minister Modi said, have been bringing laurels for the country besides claiming to have bridged the gap between the region and the national capital.
“There was a time when Northeast India used to feel that Delhi is very far from them, but today we have brought Delhi to the doorstep of the Northeast,” PM Modi said.

He also expressed his grief over loss of lives and property in various parts of the country due to floods.
