6 arrested for hurling water bottle at Assam CM’s convoy ~ Golaghat Police have arrested six persons — all of them Congress activists — in connection with the hurling of a water bottle at the convoy of Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in Golaghat on Monday (June 30) while he was passing through the area during an official visit to Golaghat district.
Dipankar Deka alias Dhanti, an 18-year-old youth from Geleky, Kaziranga, has been among the six arrested persons and named the main accused in the bottle throwing incident by Golaghat Police, Golaghat SP Rajen Singh told reporters today (June 2).
Golaghat Police had arrested another key accused named Rahul Phukan (36) of Sarupathar on Tuesday while four other co-accuseds — Arindam Bori (33) of Kolakhuwa, Bokakhat; Pranahori Phukan (30) of Geleky Mikir Gaon, Bokakhat; Pankaj Gogoi (27) of Geleky, Kaziranga; and Hrishiraj Barotial (33) also of Geleky, Kaziranga — were arrested by Golaghat Police for throwing the water bottle at CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy on Monday.
The incident had taken place when Chief Minister Dr Sarma’s convoy was on its way to Golaghat to inagugurate the newly-constructed indoor stadium of Golaghat District Sports Association.
The water bottle was thrown at him by Congress workers from the Golaghat District Congress office where they were protesting against the Gir cow issue.
The green water bottle hit Agriculture Minister Atul Bora’s car which was part of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy.
Videos shot on mobile phones showed the water bottle tossed at the Assam Chief Minister’s convoy from the Golaghat district Congress office. The bottle hit the car in which Atul Bora was was part of CM Dr Sarma’s convoy.
“We cannot take the incident lightly. The bottle was thrown at the Assam Chief Minister’s convoy. Had it not been a water bottle and something that could have caused greater damage, what would have been the outcome,” the Golaghat SP said, adding that further investigations were underway.
Incidentally, the BJP had on Tuesday (July 1) staged statewide protests across Assam, flaying Monday’s water bottle attack on the Assam Chief Minister by Congress workers.
BJP leaders flayed the attack on CM Dr Sarma and demanded that those behind the incident be brought to book and punished exemplarily.
