5 years of horrific Abhi-Neel incident; Justice yet to be served!

PUBLISHED:

The brutal mob lynching incident at Karbi Anglong’s Dokmoka on Thursday completed its fifth year, while justice for the heinous crime still awaited.

It was on June 8, 2018, when the two Guwahati boys Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das had gone for a nature trail into the remote areas of Karbi Anglong’s Dokmoka. But, who knew that this was going to be the last and worst day of their lives as some superstitious group of people beat them to death despite repeatedly crying for mercy by the two victims.

It was speculated that the mob, was fooled by some fake news of child kidnapping on media, following which the group misinterpreted the news and killed the two Guwahati youths pitilessly.

It has been five years and the families of Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das are still waiting for justice.

On Thursday, Assam along with the families of Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das observed the fifth death anniversary of the duo at their homes in Guwahati.

Speaking to the media, Abhijit Nath’s father said, “Today marks the fifth anniversary of the Abhi-Neel murder. The moments are still fresh in everyone’s mind. But we feel that the judicial process of the Court has been very lax and lenient. The witness testimony process has not been completed in 5 years.”

“We are getting frustrated day by day. The accused should be punished. Such incidents can happen anywhere, ” he said. Abhijit Nath’s father urged Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to take necessary action.

Although, there have been several court hearings in connection with the incident; all the accused who were involved in the case were taken into judicial custody, however, the alleged slow judicial proceedings are making it more painful and worse for the victim’s families and loved ones.

The Assam Police submitted an 844-page chargesheet on September 1, 2018. A total of 20 out of 47 accused named in the chargesheet have been identified so far. They are Timung, Bikram Hanse, Mensing Kro, Raikom Timung, Babu Singh Kro, Phukon Lekhte, Pres Timung, Rotneswar Terang, Onda Mech, Bidyasing Rongpi, Rupsing Kro, Babu Rongpi, Anos Timung, Inosen Engti, Sikhari Rongpi, Waresh Rongpi, Biswaram Swargiari, Dhono Mech, Dipjyoti Basumatary and Pangtheng Basumatary.

The case was filed under Sections 302, 341, 427, 143, 144, 147, 148, 149, 109, 332 and 186 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

It is to be noted that with the news of the mob lynching, a sense of fear, pity and heartbreak prevailed across the state, nation and even in other parts of the world.

Despite the huge condemnations of the civic societies and the common masses, such heinous acts still continue across the nation.
