Digboi: Five people were killed after a passenger vehicle they were travelling collided with a truck loaded with coal on National Highway 37 in Pawoi, Digboi on midnight, Sunday. Four of the passengers died on the spot while one succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital, others were severely injured. The injured were rushed to Margherita Civil Hospital.
As per report, 15 people were travelling from Tinsukia to Margherita in a Tata Magic passenger vehicle (AS-23CC-3431). The passenger-laden vehicle collided with a coal-laden truck (AS-01JC-2935) that was travelling towards Guwahati.
The Tata Magic vehicle was totally mangled in the impact and it took the locals, hours to retrieve the bodies. Fearing the wrath of people, the driver of the truck fled from the spot.
The victims have been identified as Jaleswar Siri, Joyram Sah, Urmila Devi and the driver Bishu Das, one of the deceased is yet to be identified.
“I was behind the Tata Magic car, the truck was travelling towards Guwahati and suddenly I heard a sound. I thought it was the sound of a tyre burst, but later we found that the Tata Magic had collided with a truck. Four people including the driver of the Tata Magic were dead on the spot others were rushed to the Margherita Civil Hospital,” stated a passer-by.
The region has been witnessing frequent accidents due to over-speeding of both passenger vehicles and coal carrying trucks and dumpers.
