5 held for hurling water bottle at Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy ~ Golaghat Police have held five persons — all of them Youth Congress activists — in connection with the hurling of a water bottle at the convoy of Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in Golaghat while he was passing through the area during an official visit to Upper Assam districts on Monday (June 30).

While Golaghat Police arrested one person named Rahul Phukan, four others — Arindam Bori, Pranahori Phukan, Pankaj Gogoi and Dhonti Deka — have been picked-up for questioning and are also likely to be arrested soon.

The incident took place when Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy was on its way to Numaligarh Refinery Limited when a water bottle was thrown at him by Congress workers from the Golaghat District Congress Committee office where they were protesting against the Gir cow issue.

Chief Minister Dr Sarma almost downplayed the incident saying had the Congress workers not protested they would have been answerable to their party leaders in Guwahati.

Despite Chief Minister Dr Sarma tried to brush aside the issue, Golaghat Police swung into action considering the security aspect it involved, and detained four people — Parthasarathi Bora, Rupantar Tanti, Krishna Chutia and Rahul Saikia — for questioning yesterday.

They were, however, released later.

Golaghat Police then arrested Rahul Phukan for his alleged involvement in the incident while later picking up four other Congress leaders for questioning.

Golaghat Police sources told News Live that Arindam Bori, Pranahori Phukan, Pankaj Gogoi and Dhonti Deka who were picked-up today are also likely to be arrested.
