38th National Games: Lovlina, Ankushita win golds, Shiva Thapa settles for silver

GUWAHATI, Feb 7: Olympic bronze medalist boxer Lovlina Borgohain and fellow Assam pugilist Ankushita Boro punched their way to the gold medal while six-time Asian champion and Olympian Shiva Thapa settled for a silver in the 38th National Games which is presently underway in Uttarakhand.

Lovlina, competing in the Middleweight (75kg) category, decimated Chandigarh’s Pranshu Rathore 5-0 in the final to bag the gold.

On the other hand, Ankushita Boro who is competing in the women’s Welterweight (66kg) division, outclassed homegirl Kajal by an identical scoreline to bag the second gold for Assam.

Meanwhile, former 6-time Asian champion Shiva Thapa settled for a silver after losing narrowly to Vanshraj of the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) in the final. Vanshraj got the better of the Assam pugilist 4-3.

Assam is presently in the 22nd place in the medal tally winning two golds, 14 silvers and 11 bronze medals.

SSCB is leading the tally with 38 golds, 13 silvers and 12 bronze medals.
