TMC delegation detained at Silchar airport, clash with police

PUBLISHED:

The eight-member Trinamool Congress delegation, on a two-day visit to Assam in an apparent bid to create divisions on linguistic lines in the wake of the publication of the draft NRC, arrived in Silchar today (Aug 2) to a rather raucous welcome as they clashed with police inside the airport.

Television visuals showed TMC members entering into heated arguments with policemen after they were detained at the airport by cops and Cachar district administration officials as a preventive measure to ensure that they do not create law and order problems.

The delegation comprising 6 MPs — Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Ratna De Nag, Nadimul Haque, Arpita Ghosh and Mamata Thakur — MLA Mohua Moitra and West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim have been sent to Assam at the express orders of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after the publication of the NRC final draft in which names of 40 lakh applicants were not included.
