World Cup: England end penalty jinx, to face Sweden in Q/F

PUBLISHED:

England finally ended their penalties jinx in FIFA world cups to beat Colombia 4-3 on shootouts in the last round-of-16 match in Moscow to set up a quarter-final clash with Sweden.

England were almost in the quarters in normal time but a stoppage-time equaliser from Barcelona defender Yerry Mina, his third goal in Russia 2018, forced the match into extra time and then penalties.

The young English team created history by winning their first penalty shootouts in a world cup final game as Harry Kane led from the front, scoring two penalty kicks — one in regulation time and the other in the shootout — to take England to the quarter-finals and also take his individual tally of goals to seven.

“It’s a big night for England,” Kane was quoted as saying by Reuters after the match on Tuesday, and added: “It’s a young team but we’ve grown up a lot on that pitch tonight. We know obviously in the past England haven’t done great and it was great to get that one off our back.”

Meanwhile, Sweden entered the quarter-finals after defeating Switzerland by a solitary goal in the penultimate last-16 tie at St. Petersburg.

France will face Uruguay in the first quarter-final at Nizhny Novgorod on Friday (June 6 at 7:30 pm IST) while five-time champions Brazil will square off in the second last-eight tie at Kazan at 11:30 pm IST Friday.

On the other hand, the Sweden-England quarter-final match will be played at the Samara Arena, Samara, at on Saturday (June 7 at 7:30 pm IST) while hosts Russia will face Croatia in the last round-of-eight match at Sochi (11:30 pm IST).
