3 killed in Puri Rath Yatra stampede ~ At least 3 persons were killed and 50 others injured in a stampede during the Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha, early Sunday morning.
The incident took place near the Shree Gundicha temple, around 3 kilometres from the Jagannath temple where the yatra began, at around 4:30 am today (June 29).
A large crowd had gathered near the temple for darshan and, as the number of devotees began to swell, a stampede took place, apparently triggered by the arrival of two trucks carrying materials for the rituals.
Two of the deceased persons are women, reports said, while the third is a 70-year-old man. They have been identified as Basanti Sahu from Bolagarh, and Premakant Mohanty and Pravati Das from Balipatna.
The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals, and the condition of six people is learnt to be critical, Puri District Collector Siddharth S Swain was quoted as saying.
The bodies have been sent for postmortem and an investigation is underway.
