India continued their superb run in the longer format of the game defeating the Proteas by an innings and 137 runs in the second Test in Pune to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test series.
The visitors were bundled out just after the tea break on the fourth day’s play for 189 runs in their second innings after being made to follow-on earlier in the morning.
Come-back man Umesh Yadav returned with impressive bowling figures of 3 for 22 while Jadeja picked up three and Ashwin grabbed two for 45 in 21 overs.
Although Vernon Philander (37) and Maharaj (22) wagged for the visitors in the second innings as well, the tail gave in after the fall of Philander’s wicket.
The victory stamped India’s No. 1 position in the Test rankings and gave Virat Kohli, playing in his 50th Test, a 11th consecutive series victory at home.
Kohli, who made an unbeaten 254, was named Player of the Match.
The third and final Test of the series will be played in Ranchi from October 19.
