27 Maoists, including top leader Nambala Keshava Rao, killed in Chhattisgarh encounter

The intense gunfight broke out between Maoists and security forces in Narayanpur district of Chhattisgarh

At least 27 Maoists — including top Maoist leader Nambala Keshava Rao, alias Basavaraj — were killed in Chhattisgarh in a fierce encounter between security forces and a group of Naxals at Narayanpur district of the State.

The gunbattle reportedly erupted two days ago in which the 27 Maoists were killed.

Top Maoist leader Nambala Keshava Rao, alias Basavaraj, the mastermind behind the Gadchiroli attack that claimed 15 C-60 commandos and the Dantewada attack in which BJP MLA Bhima Mandavi and four security personnel were killed, was also eliminated today.

The security team involved in the encounter comprises Chhattisgarh Police personnel and the District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawans, reports said, adding that casualties could increase further.

A security personnel is also learnt to have been martyred in the gunbattle.

The operation was launched following a tip-off about the presence of a senior Maoist commander in Abujhmad area.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, meanwhile, applauded security forces for neutralising the 27 dreaded Maoists and termed it as a “landmark achievement” in the fight against left-winged extremism. 

“A landmark achievement in the battle to eliminate Naxalism. Today, in an operation in Narayanpur, Chhattisgarh, our security forces have neutralized 27 dreaded Maoists, including Nambala Keshav Rao, alias Basavaraju, the general secretary of CPI-Maoist, topmost leader, and the backbone of the Naxal movement,” Amit Shah said in a post on ‘X’.
