18 students booked for physically assaulting juniors at NIT Silchar campus

PUBLISHED:

Months after the inhuman ragging incident in Dibrugarh University that shook the State, another ragging incident has come to light at NIT Silchar.

A fourth-semester student of NIT Silchar was assaulted by senior students and is currently undergoing treatment at JJIMS hospital. The incident took place inside the NIT campus on Friday.

The student has been identified as Siddhant Pathiya, a fourth-semester student of the Computer Science branch.

As per the victim student, on Thursday night he stayed at the NIT campus and parked his car in front of hostel-6.

He stated that senior inmates of the hostel abused him verbally, slapped and kicked him besides also damaged his car. The seniors, he alleged, hit him with glass bottles on his head and back.
The senior students beat him with glass bottles, and hockey sticks and also punched and kicked him.

Siddhant’s head, neck, chest, abdomen and waist were severely injured due to the assault. Siddharth said some faculty members of the institution, who were informed about the assault, rescued him and sent him to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

Later his parents admitted him to a private hospital in Meherpur for better treatment.

Speaking to News Live Siddhant Pottho said, “The whole incident began with someone deflating the tyres of my car at night and the car was also damaged to some extent. In the morning when I called a mechanic to change my tyres, he told me that someone had stabbed the tyres 6-7 times with a knife. I came to know about the person who was behind the incident and so I called him and said that I will file an FIR against him at Ghungoor Police Outpost. Within 10-15 minutes, he returned with a group of other boarders and badly assaulted me in front of professors. They hit my head with glass bottles, punched me and kicked me. My friend was also badly beaten while trying to save me. The professors tried to save me but they didn’t listen to them. At one point, I thought I’d die. I want justice that’s all I have to say.”

Paitya lodged an FIR against 18 seniors at Ghungoor Police Outpost on Saturday with the help of his family members.
