Heman Bekele, a 14-year-old from Annandale, Virginia, has been named “America’s Top Young Scientist” for his invention of a soap designed to treat skin cancer.

He clinched this prestigious award from 3M and Discovery Education, renowned as one of the nation’s premier middle school science competitions.

In his award submission, Heman expressed his belief in the power of young minds to make a positive impact on the world and shared his lifelong fascination with biology and technology, which found a perfect outlet in this challenge.

As a ninth-grader from Annandale, Virginia, Heman entered the prestigious 3M Young Scientist Challenge while studying at Frost Middle School. He subsequently won America’s Top Young Scientist.

The annual challenge asks students starting fifth grade to submit a one to two-minute-long video for a chance to win $25,000 and an exclusive mentorship with a 3M scientist.

The soap bars contain salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and tretinoin meant to slowly reactivate dendritic cells
