Guwahati, Dec 24: The 17th convocation of Tezpur University was held on Monday at the Kalagru Bishnu Prasad Rabha auditorium of the university where 1,275 students received their degrees and diplomas.
Among them, 82 were awarded PhDs, 749 Masters, 402 Under Graduates (B.Tech/B.Sc/BA), 42 diplomas and PG diplomas.
The convocation was presided over by the Governor of Assam Prof. Jagdish Mukhi as the Chancellor of the university.
In his speech, Governor Mukhi said that Tezpur University was established as a result of historic Assam Accord. Therefore, Assamese department in the university holds paramount importance. Prof. Mukhi said that with extensive research works the department would emphasize on promotion of Assamese language-culture and literature.
Attending the event as the chief guest, University Grants Commision (UGC) Chairman Prof. DP Singh said, “Indian education system is the second largest education system in the world with 50 thousand colleges and 1 thousand institutes which offer degrees, 15 lakh university and college teachers and 3 crore 70 lakh students. The students from Tezpur University have been employed in the country and abroad and they are contributing to the different sectors.”
Prof. Singh expressed his happiness over the fact that 42% students of the premiere educational institute are females.
In his welcome speech, Prof. Vinod Kumar Jain, Vice-Chancellor of the University highlighted the achievements of the university since its establishment on January 21, 1994.
Along with Sahitya Akademi awardee litterateur Geeta Upadhyay, several well-known personalities and guardians of the students were present in the convocation.
