Will continue to oppose citizenship bill: Atul Bora

PUBLISHED:

Dispur MLA Atul Bora had hit out at his own party and government over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, saying he will keep on opposing any move to award citizenship to any Bangladeshi national entering Assam after March 25, 1971. The BJP MLA said he differed from views his party or other legislators might have over the controversial legislation and even slammed the Sarbananda Sonowal-led Assam Government.

The Dispur MLA was interacting with a delegation of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) that called him at his residence in Guwahati. The AASU, it may be mentioned, had decided to call on MPs and MLAs of Assam and apprise them of their stand on the citizenship bill.

“I am different from other party leaders and MLAs. I have been and will keep opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill that I perceive as a threat to the interests of the indigenous people of Assam,” Atul Bora said.

He also went to the extent of criticizing Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal over the “Jati, Mati, Bheti” slogan saying that the party and the government has failed to live up to the hopes and expectations of the people and of going back on the promises it had made before the 2016 assembly elections.

“I believe in doing what I say and saying what I do. The Government, I believe, has failed to live up to the hopes and expectations of the people of the State. What did the party promise before the elections and what are they doing now?” he added.
