Protests against citizenship bill continue

PUBLISHED:

Protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, continued with the AASU and almost a hundred other groups and organizations opposing the bill that was passed in Lok Sabha yesterday (Jan 8) and is awaiting assent in the Upper House of Parliament.

After the 11-hour Assam bandh called by AASU and 30 other organizations yesterday that paralised normal life in the Brahmaputra valley, various organizations staged demonstrations and flayed the BJP for tabling the bill in Parliament.

Incidentally, college students joined in the protests with students of Cotton University boycotting classes indefinitely opposing the citizenship bill. Students of many other colleges across Assam, including Suwalkuchi College, National Law College, Guwahati College, Narengi Anchalik College, Margherita College, Baihati Chariali College, Pub-Kamrup College, Jorhat College, CKD Kollege, paramidical students of JMCH, and DCB College, also staged protests opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

On the other hand, effigies of BJP leaders were burnt elsewhere by protesters who threatened to intensify the agitation and claimed that under no circumstance will they allow any Bangladeshi national to be given Indian citizenship.

The AJYCP and a few other student bodies tried to storm into the Assam Assembly opposing the legislation, breaking barricades set up by police and clashed with cops forcing the men in khaki to launch a baton charge on the protesting student activists.

AASU leaders, meanwhile, said they will intensify their agitation and will closely monitor the developments that take place in the Upper House of Parliament.

“The Congress will also be under our scanner since their stand in Rajya Sabha, after the bill is tabled in the Upper House, will be crucial in determining whether it is passed or rejected,” AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi told News Live.
