PUBLISHED:

Internationally-famous Kaziranga National Park, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reopened its gates to visitors for the 2018-19 tourist season. Assam Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta, ATDC chairman Jayanta Malla Baruah, senior park officials attended the formal reopening of two ranges of the park — Kohora and Bagori — for tourists while the other ranges will also be reopened in the coming days.

The ministers and other officials also enjoyed jeep safari inside the park after the formal reopening of the park.

The park welcomed around 200 tourists, including some 50-odd foreign visitors, today after the two ranges of the park were formally reopened. Tourists will be able to visit the park, famous for the one-horned rhinoceros and other species of flora and fauna, and also enjoy jeep safari. Tourists, however, cannot enjoy elephant safaris due to communication bottlenecks, the Forest Minister said.

Meanwhile, some foreign tourists who enjoyed the sight and sounds of Kaziranga, told News Live they were enchanted by the internationally-famous wildlife hotspot but expressed concern over rampant rhino poaching. They also said stringent punishment, some even favouring capital punishment, should be awarded to animal poachers.
