In another shocking incident that highlights the prevalence of superstitious beliefs among villagers in 21st century Assam, two women were physically assaulted by tea estate labourers and other villagers at Bandarchalia tea estate in Titabar in Assam’s Jorhat district.

The incident took place Sunday morning after three persons of the tea estate died after suffering from a “mysterious” disease on Saturday night. Agitated labourers of the tea garden along with other villagers claimed the three persons died after the two “witches” performed “sorcery” in a nearby field during the night.

The mob physically assaulted the two women after branding them witches before they were rescued by Titabar Police.

Incidentally, the mob followed the rescued women to the police station where they continued their slaps, punches and kicks and even attempted to disrobe them. However, cops intervened and saved the lives of the two women.
