EXCLUSIVE: Declared foreigner now an NRC official

PUBLISHED:

As the chorus of voices apprehensive of anomalies creeping into the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) published on July 30 grows, a person who was declared a foreigner by the Foreigners’ Tribunal has been actively involved with the NRC update process.

Mohammad Khairul Islam, a teacher by profession, was declared a foreigner by the Foreigners’ Tribunal of Morigaon in 2016. He then approached the Gauhati High Court challenging the order of the Foreigners’ Tribunal and is currently on bail. He, however, has not been given any relief by the high court and the case is still on.

Significantly enough, Islam, who is a teacher of Thengsali Khanda Pukhuri LP School in Morigaon district, was roped into the workforce involved with the NRC update process since September 2017.

“I was declared a foreigner by the foreigners’ tribunal in 2016. I had approached the Gauhati High Court and the case is still pending. I am currently on bail,” Islam told News Live, adding that he has been involved with the NRC update process since September, 2017.

Khairul Islam was seen at the NRC Seva Kendra at Mikirbheta today (Aug 10), looking into claims and objections of people who have not made it to the NRC draft.
