Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (Jan 4) announced in clear terms that his government will go ahead with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and that it will be passed in Parliament very soon. Prime Minister said this while addressing a massive public rally at Ramnagar in Silchar, as he formally sounded the party’s election bugle ahead of the general elections scheduled to be held, in all possibility in April, this year.

“Our Government is going forward with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The bill in connected with our emotions and involves with the lives of the people. Where will people who are emotionally connected with India go if they face persecution in another country?” PM Modi said, and added: “That’s why we brought the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, after some deep introspection.”

“There might have been mistakes made in the past. Policies taken during partition might not have been correct. We want to repent for mistakes made in the past. We are not doing any favour by bringing in the citizenship bill! We only want to repent for those mistakes. I hope the bill will be passed in Parliament very soon,” PM Modi added.
