Assam Floods: Situation still grim; 11 dead so far, over 6 lakh hit

The flood situation in Assam continues to remain grim with swirling water of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries inundating more villages in the past 24 hours. Over six lakh people living in over 1,000 villages have been hit by the deluge in 15 districts, Barak Valley districts among the worst hit.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neematighat (Jorhat), the Dhansiri at Numaligarh, Jia Bharali in Sonitpur, Kopili at Kampur (Nagaon district) and Badarpurghat (Karimganj), Katakhal at Matizuri (Hailakandi) while the Kushiyara is flowing above the danger mark in Karimganj.

The body of a young student was recovered by SDRF divers at Narayanpur in Lakhimpur district today. Dayalu Saikia went missing after his body was swept away by Pisola river yesterday. His body was recovered after a marathon search operation launched by SDRF divers since Saturday evening.

BSF personnel have been pressed into service to rescue marooned villagers.

On the other hand, landslides triggered by heavy rains were reported from Mahur, Harangajao and Maibang in Dima Hasao district in which one person lost his life.

Meanwhile, many people living in relief camps have complained of not getting enough relief while many others are taking refuge in uplands and other embankments.
