Assam bandh affects normal life in the State

PUBLISHED:

The 12-hour Assam bandh called by the ‘Janagusthiyo Oikya Mancha’, a common platform of six communities of Assam, has severely affected the normal life in the State. The dawn-to-dusk shutdown has paralysed the daily life in several parts of the State.

The bandh had earlier been called for a period of 48 hours, but it was reduced to 12 hours on the request of who are sitting for their exams. In a bid to enforce the bandh, protesters put up burning tyres on the road on Monday in Dibrugarh, Numaligarh and other parts of the State.

The six communities who called for the shutdown are Tai Ahom, Moran, Mottock, Chutia, Koch Rajbongshi and Tea Tribes. These groups have been long demanding ST status and the bandh has been called as part of an ongoing agitation for the meeting of their demand.
