Army continues offensive against ULFA(I) at Jagun

PUBLISHED:

The Army is continuing with its fresh offensive against the anti-talks faction of the ULFA — the ULFA (Independent) — at Jagun in Tinsukia district near the border with Arunachal Pradesh amid reports that a 22-member rebel group entered Assam and is camping somewhere along the Assam-Arunachal border.

There were reports of a gunfight between the Army and suspected ULFA(I) members at Kathakathoni reserve forest yesterday (Sep 24) evening with the Army claiming to have killed two militants in the shootout.

The men in olive resumed their operations for the second day today and recovered a bag containing an IED, ammunition, detonators, some explosives and a few medicines. The bag, Army sources said, belonged to the ULFA(I) rebels who had probably left it after being forced to retreat following the renewed crackdown.

Sources, meanwhile, said dreaded anti-talks ULFA commander Rupam Asom and Udoy Asom are also part of the 22-member rebel group that is planning to carry out subversive activities besides launching a massive extortion drive to fill its coffers.
