Ambubachi Mela: Temple doors opened for devotees after Nibritti, lakhs offer prayers before Goddess Kamakhya

PUBLISHED:

After a four-day hiatus, the doors of the Kamakhya Temple, one of the most powerful Shakti shrines in the country, were opened for visitors after ‘Nibritti’, a ritual believed to purify the sanctum sanctorum of the temple after Goddess Kamakhya completes her annual menstrual cycle.

Lakhs of devotees were seen making a beeline to the temple, with people walking to the temple perched atop the Nilachal Hills to offer prayers to Maa Kamakhya.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also offered his prayers early Tuesday morning after the temple doors were opened for devotees.

The temple doors were closed Friday night.

Lakhs of devotees from Assam, rest of the country and even from other nations have been camping at the Nilachal Hills for the past four days.

“I have come from Gujarat. I come here every year during Ambubachi Mela,” a woman devotee told News Live.

Security in and around the temple was beefed up for the four-day event while hundreds of young volunteers laboured day and night to maintain discipline among the visiting devotees.
