NRC Claims & Objections: Only 700 objections filed

PUBLISHED:

The process for filing claims and objections in connection with the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update process ends today (Dec 31) with the process of correction of names etc. set to begin from Jan 2. Significantly, although the names of over 40 lakh people (40,07,707 people to be exact) were left out of the draft NRC, the number of people submitting claims for inclusion of their names in the updated citizen’s register and those filing objections has been low.

While around 20.95 lakh people — half of the total people left out of the draft citizen’s register – submitted claims for inclusion of their names, only around 700 have lodged objections against entry of names in the draft NRC.

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has expressed concern over only a motely group of people filing objections although there were allegations of foreigners getting their names included in the draft NRC.

Incidentally, the Supreme Court which is monitoring the entire exercise had earlier extended the deadline for filing of claims and objections from the earlier fixed Dec 15 to Dec 31, 2018.

The process of correction of names & other details will continue till Jan 31 with the NRC update office announcing that the correction process can also be carried out online from Jan 2 to Jan 31, 2019.
