NRC | Deadline for filing claims & objections extended till Dec 15

PUBLISHED:

The Supreme Court today (Nov 1) extended the deadline for filing claims and objections so as to get names of Indian citizens included in the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) till Dec 15. The apex court had earlier set a two-month period beginning Sep 25 during which genuine Indian citizens whose names have not been included in the draft citizen’s register can file claims and objections.

However, a two-judge bench of the apex court comprising Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman extended the deadline by another 20 days meaning people can now file claims and objections till Dec 15.

On the other hand, the two-judge bench also directed NRC authorities in the State to accept five documents — NRC of 1951, voter list of 1966, voter list of 1971, refugee registration certificate till 1971 and ration card issued till 1971 that were rejected by NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela — to be used as documentation proof while making claims and objections.

Meanwhile, the top court also fixed timeline for issuance of notice as January 15 to claimants and verification of documents as February 1, news agency PTI reported.
