Kerala Floods | Thousands stranded, News Live at Ground Zero

PUBLISHED:

The devastating Kerala floods have taken a huge toll, both in terms of loss of human lives as well as destruction and devastation of property worth several hundred crores. Although the situation has bettered in the past 24 hours, around 10 lakh people are still living in relief camps.

The India Meteorological Department stated that Kerala recorded 9 cm of rainfall yesterday (Sunday) as against 19 cm and 11 cms on Aug 16 and 17.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people from Assam and the Northeast are also stranded in flood-hit Kerala. News Live’s Political Editor Chayamoni Bhuyan, who is reporting from Ground Zero, met four women who have been stranded at Chengannur town in Alappuzha district and has also communicated with the Assam chief minister’s office so that steps can be initiated for their rescue along with other people from Assam who have been stranded in various districts of the deluge-hit State.

The four women had gone to Kerala to take part in a handloom and handicrafts fair but were stranded at a lodge since Aug 9 in the wake of the devastating floods.

IMD has also withdrawn the red alert from all 14 districts.

Meanwhile, the first commercial flight landed at INS Garuda Kochi Naval Air Station as the airport resumed commercial operations in the aftermath of the deluge. Rescue and relief operations have been intensified as authorities fear the outbreak of diseases post-floods.
