Shweta Murder Verdict: Death sentence for boyfriend Govind Singhal, life terms for his mother and sister

The Guwahati Sessions Court, in a landmark verdict made in the sensational Shweta Agarwal murder case, has awarded capital punishment to Govind Singhal, Shweta’s boyfriend, while Govind’s mother Kamla Devi and sister Bhawani were sentenced to life for their role in the chilling murder.

The Guwahati court had earlier on Tuesday (July 30) convicted Govind, his mother Kamla Devi and sister Bhawani in the murder of Shweta Agarwal, whose body was recovered inside their residence at Santipur in Bharalumukh, Guwahati, on Dec 4, 2017.

Shweta’s family members were in tears after the verdict was pronounced and thanked the court for the exemplary punishment handed to her murderers.

“We are very happy today. I thank everyone for their help and support. We have got justice,” Shweta’s father told News Live after the judgement was made.

The partially burnt body of Shweta, then a B. Com student of KC Das Commerce College, was recovered from Govind Singhal’s house on Dec 4, 2017.

Shweta, who in a relationship with Govind, had died after he reportedly banged her head into the walls following an altercation. Govind, his mother and sister then tried to dump the body at the Bharalu river bank.

After they failed to do so, they set fire to the body in an attempt to make it appear as a suicide case.

Shweta was a very brilliant student and had topped the Higher Secondary examinations in Commerce stream in 2015.
