Bogibeel bridge inauguration likely in Dec

PUBLISHED:

Union Minister of State for Railways, Rajen Gohain on Tuesday visited the Bogibeel bridge in Dibrugarh and took stock of the construction process. The Minister said that the rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra would be ready for inauguration in December this year.

“The construction of the Bogibeel bridge is expected to be completed by the end of November. Right now, the load taking capacity of the bridge is being tested. Hopefully, by December, the bridge will be ready for the public,” minister Rajen Gohain said.

The 4.94 km long bridge has already missed several deadlines over the past two decades, having taken almost 17 years to be ready for use. The double decker bridge has three lane roads on top and double line rail below.

“When Prime Minister Narendra Modi gives his consent to inaugurate the bridge, we will open the bridge for the public. We are yet to decide the inauguration date but surely will be inaugurated within December,” Rajen Gohain added.

The Bogibeel bridge, situated 17 km downstream of Dibrugarh and Dhemaji, spans the Brahmaputra river and will connect the town of Dibrugarh in the south to Dhemaji to the river’s north. The bridge is located just over 20 km away from the Assam- Arunachal Pradesh border and is thus expected to act as an alternative to the Kolia Bhomora Setu, Tezpur in providing connectivity to nearly five million people residing in Upper Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
